Fashion and Feminism

Dorothy E. Smith (1896-1990)

I did a review on Dorothy E. Smith round last week, and the thought of her still lingers on my mind until now. Dorothy E. Smith for me was one of the most amazing women of all time. She was a super-brilliant social-theorist, and she managed to break down the glass ceiling for women in the academic world, especially in knowledge productions in social sciences.

Her achievement was nothing but real. Her name until now is highly mentioned in many theory books as a highly acclaimed social theorist, she's been defined as an acclaimed sociologist on the world of living scholars, where the thoughts and works of women usually defined as 'unimportant'.

One of the things that i adore about her thought is that she managed to proposed a strong criticism toward the patriarchies by simply giving a "You don't even know what you're talking about"-attitude. Smith, with her feminist perspective  had given a new standpoint in sociology both as a knowledge and as a practice.

I have so much awe toward the female sociologist that i began to think. "How about Fashion?".

Fashion as a part of culture's definitely one of the area that was strongly pointed by Smith. Fashion, as well as the whole universal culture was built by the standpoint of males. So how about us? the mere consumer of fashion?

Are we, as modern women, are still hegemonized by the dominant males standpoint? or we, women, are more critical toward the fashion industry? or even better, are we using fashion as the bold statement of "I'm  a Woman, I'm Independent and Unique, and I'm showing it to the world through the Outfit that I Single-handedly put together."

Anyways, talking about feminism. Yesterday, April 21 was the Kartini's Day. A day to celebrate the life of a bright woman who pioneered the women's emancipation movement here in Indonesia. My mom and i celebrated the day by putting on some Kebayas (traditional Indonesian women's outfit) with modern mix and match.

a random tank, Kebaya-inspired (x)sml by Biyan outer, and a random embroidered pink skirt

and paired the whole outfit with these beautiful Calliope flats.

i had a good day indeed.

so for all, have a good day! embrace the woman in you,
and HAPPY EARTH DAY! (April 22) :)

*cheers*

Thanks God I've Got My BF ;)

Yesterday, I went to my boyfriend's house to do one of my papers. He agreed to help me, for I also helped him doing his ;). I chose his house for I can't concentrate doing my paper in my own house (with those wi-fi connections, my bed, and all? hell no!), I didn't wanna do it in campus either, since the library was too crowded (even it was crowded last Saturday!).

and I had a good time, his mom cooked for me, and I managed to finish one of the important chapter, yayyyy! :D

wearing this Gaudi flower blouse, Colorbox jeans, vintage denim jacket (I've been having this jacket since elementary school i believe!), and shoes from Mustafa (Singapore), they are actually a birthday gift from Miss. L (yes, she's in TOWN!!).

I was also carrying my Ananas bag, and it was soooo heavy! I guess that's the downside of having such huge bag, you'll have a certain tendency of throwing all the stuffs there. But it's so functional though :)

Yesterday, All My Papers Seemed so Far Away.. ;)

I was in campus yesterday, doing one of my article about elders issues, and having a group meeting for my 'Rural Sociology' final paper. Wearing this Escrava 90's dress (it was my mom's!), knitted shawl from Ca Tu Cak market (Bangkok, Thailand), Charles&Keith bag, and Ripcurl flip-flops.

and today, on such saturday morning,
i'm going to campus again.. working for my other papers ..
so, see ya guys, and hello library! ;)

This is it..

Finals, too many assignments, too many papers, too many writings to be done, too much preassure! But somehow it gives you a little inspiration to dress more playfully. Add some colors, and just enjoy the ride ;).

Wearing a Giordano white man's tee, Korean-inspired knitted vest, DIY denim skirt, DIY LCD necklace, Misschic oxford flats, and this adorable orange bag from Vietnam.

p.s.
I guess my finals also give me some sort of inspirations, I'm writting again! :D
check it out on the 'CAUSALITY' section..
-it's written in Indonesian though :(-

Catch Up Post ;)

Well, since I was a bit busy last week and didn't really have enough time to post my daily thingies, I'll do it rite here rite now.. ;)

Wednesday,
Such  busy day.. I had 3 classes, 3 papers, 3 presentations, you name it! Wearing an Et Cetera white shirt, Batik Keris Vest, Zara pants, courduroy postman bag, and Misschic oxford flats.

My boyfriend took all of the pics above, and during the time, this very cute cat came along. We played with him for a little while, and headed home afterwards :)

Thursday,
It was raining in the morning, so the weather was cold. Wearing a custom made tee (it was me and my two best buds on the tee!), Fashionlicious black batwing cardi, Colorbox black skinny jeans, Cotton.ink shawl, Ananas bag, and Mr. Freddy oxford shoes.

I had some pedicure that day, with my boyfriend.. YES, I actually convinced him to do so ;), so much FUN!!

Friday,

My boyfriend and I went to H.E.M.A dutch restaurant on Menteng Huis. It was a very nice family restaurant, with some dutch-style decorations, dutch-style meals, and most importantly, AFFORDABLE prices! The food are delicious, and we just couldn't help to eat A LOT! really, A LOT!
for more info of the place, click here

Sadly, my cameraphone broke down and I didn't manage to take some more pics..

but you still can see some of plastic tulips behind us ;)

Like this 'Little Miss Chatterbox' Zara TRF tee, Noir Su Blanc stripped cardi, a songket shawl, a pair of skinny jeans, courduroy postman bag, and Charles&Keith flats..

It was so cold yesterday, it was still raining even when I got back home and took these pics, that'll explain the bad lighting of the pics..

Great Friends, Great Pizza :)

We all woke up early, went there, and was determined to find a proper informer for our group and individual research.

Back to the Urban Life..

Like I've said on my latest post, I was staying in Salatiga for 4 days due to school obligation. I was doing this field research in a village called 'Cuntel'. The village was a gorgeous agricultural spot near Merbabu mountain with such uniqueness that mesmerized anyone who comes to that place. I was practically in love with that place, but sadly, after 4 days of awesome stays, I went home to Jakarta, and greeted the urban life again.. :)

My college life, for example, has started normally again. Frankly, another academical day always means another form of outfit ensemble. So today, I wore a plain white Bossini tee, paired with vintage washed Jeans, an ethnic India silk shawl, Palomino quilted bag, and a pair of Misschic oxford flats.

Anyway, after class, my boyfriend and I went to a department store nearby to buy a birthday present for my bestie, Ata.

We picked a gorgeous stuff that I believe will fit perfectly for her-I can't tell what's that here ;), and we also found this awesome pair of Chrysalis heels that I purchased afterwards..

I was so thrilled with my new pair of heels and I just couldn't help to take pics as soon as I got home :D

The pics above are the pics taken when I tried on the shoes in my house. I actually went to campus wearing these Misschic oxford flats, which I love a lot too :)

very classic, yet soooo comfy! just perfect for campus!
